VILLA PURIFICACIÓN
The most interesting buildings in the centre of Cereixo are, without doubt, the Cereixo Towers and Vila Purificación. The latter is a two-storey, L-shaped house built at the end of the 18th century. Originally, the ground floor would have been used as a store and stable, and the living quarters would have been on the first floor. Interesting items at the back of the house include a stairway with a stone baluster in a style known as Compostelano and its best-know feature, the impressive stone “horreo” grain store.
Within the grounds of the Vila Purificación, one of the oldest houses in Cereixo, is one of the longest traditional grain stores in Galicia. Such stores are called hórreos or cabazos. This one is of a type called “Fisterra”, is made entirely of stone, and has nine pairs of legs or supports. It owes its great size to the fact that Vila Purificación was the tax payment point in Cereixo. Given that many of the fees were paid in kind, normally in cereals such as wheat or corn, a good sized store was needed to keep them in.
