An important part of the coastline and the waters of the Camariñas estuary are protected for being a Site of Community Interest.
It is an area that also has Special Protection Areas for Birds.
They are figures of biodiversity conservation that make up the Natura 2000 Network.
The Puerto de Cereixo estuary is a space where the sea and the river mix, creating a unique ecosystem. Every six hours the tide rises and the river floods the banks with salt water. At low tide there is only fresh water from the Rio Grande.
In this particular habitat birds such as the gray heron (Ardea cinerea), the sea crow (Phalacrocorax carbo) or ducks (Anas platyrhynchos).
The characteristic vegetation of these marsh spaces has a great variety of plants.
The most important are the salted chard (Limonium occidentale), or xunco (Juncus), swordtails (Typha), and cerudas (Chelidonium majus). There is also no lack of species from the coastal coastline of the Costa da Morte, such as the scarce "camariña" (Corema album), the cottony (Othantus maritimus), the marine narcissus (Pancratium maritimun), the "grass to fall in love" (Armeria maritima), the sea parsley (Crithmin maritimun), soldanella (Calystegia soldanella), marine verza (Beta maritima), or devil's figueira (Datura stramonium) among many others..
